People come the world over to drink in Budapest’s famous ruin bars. While they may be the perfect place to party the night away on the weekend, if you’re looking to do something different, check out these ruin bar experiences with a twist.

Szimpla Kert may be the most famous ruin bar in Budapest, and most definitely one of the most famous in the world, you’ll also find a range of events taking place here that are more than just about doing shots of pálinka and stag parties. On Sunday mornings, head over to this iconic ruin pub for the weekly farmer’s market. From gourmet cheeses and meat cuts, to honey and even seasonal vegetables, this market is a sensory experience that will revive you after you’ve had a few too many beers in said ruin bars the night before.
And Budapest’s residents are quite crazy about bikes, so where better to experience this two-wheeled passion than at Szimpla’s Bicycle Market, which takes place every second Saturday of the month, featuring retro, used bikes, workshops and more.
For the budding artists among you, Szimpla also has an art corner where you can draw pictures that will be displayed in an exhibition. Other events include jazz nights, folk dance events, and music from local bands.

Anker’t – Flower and Vegan Markets

Just off Andrássy Avenue, Anker’t is a ruin pub that has some of the hottest parties in town, but when the partying is over, Anker’t opens its doors for a different crowd.
For the urban gardeners among you, the Kiskertpiac, which translates as “Small Garden Market” comes with a range of flowers and gardening related elements, as well as appealing to the gastro and design enthusiasts with selected stalls on Sundays. In addition to the flower and gardening market, you’ll also find a vegan market offering food stalls and vendors selling vegan products, workshops and seminars about vegan and living a cruelty-free lifestyle and more.

Rácskert – the Placc Fashion Market

Once a month, Rácskert transforms into a market specialising in unique design and vintage fashion. For the fashionably curious among you, you can keep tabs of their events on their Facebook page if you want to pursue their unique collection of garments and accessories, and have a fröccs while doing so.

If you find the Szimpla Farmer’s Market too crowded for your taste, then head over to the IX District to Élesztő for their Sunday market. It’s a little further off the beaten track, with a choice of vendors like local cheesemongers and honey makers, plus you can grab a beer from Budapest’s cathedral to craft beer as you go shopping.

When the summer season is on, the Corvin Club hosts regular events by Budapest Rooftop Cinema from Hungarian classics, movie premiers, cult classics and French cinema.
